THE RIGHT DIRECTION?
It's fair to say that the switch 2’s release year has been a somewhat slow burner. Hardcore Nintendo fans might be pleased but the average gamer isn't blown away. Yes there have been a few first party IPs but nothing had that wow factor.
DK Bananza was up there and was a good spin on traditional platforming games, however it didn't have the hype or innovation of a 3D Mario or mainline Zelda game. So the question really is, what games can the switch 2 offer whilst we wait?
This Switch Direct shows just that, with 30 minutes of announcements from third party partners. I've gathered all the biggest reveals, check it out below.
HEAVY HITTING PORTS
Indiana Jones
This single player adventure game looks amazing on the Switch 2. They have gone above and beyond with optimizations and are pushing the switch 2 to its full potential. As someone who hasn’t played this game yet, I’d be excited to buy it when it releases on May 12th.
Fallout 4: Aniversary Edition
Of the three Bethesda games coming to switch 2, this is arguably the weakest link. There looks like lots of shimmering and fuzziness in the port’s trailer, similar to what you would see in a base PS4. Regardless, playing games like this while on the go is a bonus. You can expect the action RPG Fallout 4, which includes all the DLC, on April 28th.
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered
The final reveal of the show was the action RPG Oblivion. While I’m not the biggest fan of Elder Scrolls, I can't deny the game series impact and its cult like status amongst gamers. There was no release date unveiled but you should expect this game late 2026.
Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
This title needs no introduction, with Final Fantasy games being made for the last 38 years. The action RPG game by Square Enix stands out with its unique characters and hybrid style combat, balancing real time action with strategic elements. It looks like a stunning port to the Switch 2, sadly only running at 30 FPS though. A compromise for a smaller handheld system. You can expect this to release on June 3.
Valhiem
It was surprising to see the survival game Valheim on the Direct. There hasn’t been much news on this game for a few years since its release, though it has constantly received updates over that time. I’m sure many people are looking forward to trying it out on the Switch 2’s system, here's hoping it can reach that glorious 60 FPS mark. This doesn’t have a set release date yet, you can probably expect it late 2026.
Hollow knight
While this game is an acquired taste when it comes to platformers, especially because of its souls-like difficulty, Hollow Knight is an objectively great game. It was only a matter of time before this came to the Switch 2 and is available to purchase straight away. If you already own the game on Switch 1, it is worth noting that you can purchase the upgrade pack for Switch 2.
SHINY NEW RELEASES
Pragmata
Now this unique sci-fi adventure Pragmata made by Capcom has a few peoples’ attention. The gameplay looks familiar but also fresh with what looks like mini puzzles throughout the game. Hopefully this game runs well enough on the Switch 2. I think it will truly shine in handheld like most of the games on this list. It seems to be running at 60 FPS, thanks Nintendo. Pragmata comes out on 24th April.
Turok origins
It is the first time we’ve seen gameplay for Turok by developer Sabre Interactive, and it has people intrigued. For a reboot of an older game it has a clean aesthetic and the art direction alone makes this game look promising. It really showcases the Switch 2’s full potential. Apparently it has multiplayer too. I look forward to this game dropping in fall 2026.
The Adventures of Elliot: The Millenium Tales
If you have played Octopath traveller you will recognise this 2D-HD art style by developer Square Enix. It is a fully linear game with what seems to be Hades-like top down combat. There is hype for this game and the Switch 2 really shines with games like this. You can look forward to it on June 18th.
Resident evil requiem
If you like jumpscares and creepy monsters, this game is for you. The ninth installment of Capcom’s premier horror game looks to impress on the Switch 2. While not as good looking as some of the games on this list it is still worth mentioning. Resident Evil: Reqiuem is available on Feb 27th. Orbitals
The Underdog of the Direct was probably Orbitals. Developer Shapefarm has left an impression with their 80’s anime themes and ghostbusters-like gadgets. This is the game to look out for and would be a great jam to play with partners or mates. Also thanks to gameshare, you only need to own one copy of the game to play with two people, even online! You can expect this game to release summer 2026.
